Pap & Chakalaka Bites

Preparation Time: 9 minutes | Cook Time: 18 minutes


Ingredients

For the Pap Base:

500 g maize meal

1 l water

Salt to taste

1 tbsp butter

For the Filling:

1 tbsp oil

1 onion, finely chopped

2 carrots, grated

1 green pepper, diced

1 red pepper, diced

2 tomatoes, chopped

1 tbsp curry powder

1 tsp paprika

1 can (400 g) baked beans in tomato sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Binding & Coating:

½ cup Snowflake Cake Wheat Flour (to mix into cooled pap for firmness)

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup breadcrumbs

Oil for deep frying

Method

    1. Cook the pap:

  • Bring water to a boil. Slowly stir in maize meal and salt. Cook on low heat for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in butter and let cool. Mix the Snowflake cake wheat flour into the cooled pap.

  • 2. Prepare chakalaka:

  • Heat oil and sauté onion, carrots, and peppers. Add tomatoes, curry powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until soft. Stir in baked beans and simmer for 10 minutes. Let cool.

  • 3. Shape the bites:

  • Flatten a spoonful of pap, add a bit of chakalaka, and seal with more pap. Shape into balls or patties.

  • 4. Crumb and fry:

  • Dip each bite into beaten egg, coat with breadcrumbs, and deep fry until golden brown.

  • 5. Serve:

  • Enjoy hot with extra chakalaka or a spicy mayo dip.
