Baked Alaska

 



Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Serves: Serves 6 - 8

Baked Alaska is a dessert food consisting of ice cream and cake topped with browned meringue.

Ingredients

Base

1  vanilla Swiss roll

Topping

200g fresh strawberries, slices

2ml cream of tartar

45ml castor sugar

3ml vanilla essence

3  extra-large egg whites

1500ml vanilla ice cream

Method

  • For the base cut the Swiss roll into about 2 cm-thick slices and pace each slice on an individual ovenproof serving plate.
  • For the topping layer strawberries onto each Swiss roll slice, leaving a border of about 1 cm all round. Scoop a ball of ice cream on top of strawberries.
  • Beat egg whites until foamy. Add cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peak stage. Gradually add sugar ad essence and beat until stiff peak stage. Cover ice cream and Swiss roll slice completely with meringue mixture.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 220 °C for about 2 minutes, until meringue turns golden brown.
