Basic Potbrood

 



Preparation Time: 45 minutes

Cook Time: 35 minutes

Serves: Makes 1 batch of bread

Traditional South African bread is always a winner – enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

1kg Snowflake White Bread Wheat Flour

10ml salt

60g cold butter or margarine

10ml sugar

10g 1 (sachet) instant dry yeast

650ml lukewarm water

Method

  • Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in butter with fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add sugar and yeast.
  • Gradually add enough water to mix to a soft dough. Add more water, if needed.
  • Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface, knead for about 5 mins or until dough is smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased, large bowl, cover and let stand in a warm place for about 15 mins or until doubled in size.
  • Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Shape the dough into a smooth round loaf and place into a greased, large heavy-based pot. Cover with a cloth and let stand in a warm place for about 30 mins or until well risen.
  • Brush the top with water and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 35 mins.
