An easy twist on the Snowflake white bread recipe.

Ingredients

1kg Snowflake white bread flour

10ml salt

60ml butter or margarine

10ml sugar

10g (1 sachet) instant dry yeast

650ml lukewarm water

1  beaten egg

15ml milk

1  pinch coarse salt

Method

  • Sift flour and salt together. Rub in butter with fingertips until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add sugar, mix and add yeast.
  • Gradually add enough lukewarm water to mix to a soft dough. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 - 10 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place dough in a large, lightly oiled bowl, cover and leave to rise in a warm place for about 20 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • After first rising, knock down and divide dough into sticks of about 18 cm in length.
  • Place onto greased baking trays. Brush with beaten egg and 15 ml milk, and sprinkle with coarse salt, sesame or poppy seeds.
  • Cover and leave to rise until doubled in size.
  • Bake at 220 °C for 12 - 15 minutes.
