Ingredients

500g mixed dried fruit, such as prunes, apples and apricots

5ml ground mixed spice

3ml ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick

250ml water

60ml (50 g) sugar

5ml custard powder

Topping

125ml (70 g) Snowflake nutty wheat

60g butter or margarine

60ml (50 g) caramel brown sugar

Method

  • Combine dried fruit, spices, water and sugar in a medium, heavy-based saucepan. Simmer for about 1 minutes, until fruit is soft.
  • Mix custard powder in a little water and add to dried fruit mixture. Boil for a few minutes to thicken sauce. Spoon mixture into a greased, medium ovenproof dish.
  • Topping: Sift flour and add bran left behind in sieve. Rub in butter with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add sugar. Sprinkle over fruit.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 25 minutes until crumble is golden brown and crisp. Serve with custard or whipped cream.
