Herbed beer bread

Preparation Time: 10 Minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Serves: Makes 1 loaf

A mouth-watering variation on traditional beer bread.

Ingredients

750ml (420 g) Snowflake self-raising flour

5ml salt

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

30ml sugar

125ml (50 g) grated cheddar cheese

2  cloves garlic, crushed

15ml chopped fresh origanum or 5 ml dried

45ml chopped fresh parsley or 15 ml dried

340ml can beer, at room temperature

60ml milk

10ml olive oil

Method

  • Sift flour and salt together. Add pepper, sugar, cheese, garlic and herbs. Mix well.
  • Add beer and milk and mix until just combined.
  • Spoon mixture into a greased 22.5 cm loaf pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 °C for 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 180 °C and continue baking for 30 minutes. Remove bread from oven and brush with olive oil. Continue baking for about 15 minutes, or until done and golden brown.
  • Leave in pan for a few minutes before turning out into a wire rack to cool.
