Nothing beats a delicious homemade apple pie, scratch-made and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

For the Pie Crust

170g Butter, cold and cubed

8  Tbsp Cold Water

315g Snowflake Cake Wheat Flour

1  tsp Salt

For the Pie Filling

1kg Granny Smith Apples, cored, peeled and sliced

150g Sugar

2  Tbsp Snowflake Cake Wheat Flour

1  Pinch of Salt

1  tsp Ground Cinnamon

1  Pinch of Nutmeg

1  Lemon, halved (juice of one half only)

To top

1  Egg, beaten

1  Tbsp Sugar

Method

  • Mix the flour and salt in bowl, then add cubed butter and mix through until peas-sized clumps are formed
  • Add cold water gradually until the dough comes together (you may not need all the water) - the dough should not be too tacky or stick
  • Work together and turn onto your work surface. Work into a ball, cover and refrigerate
  • Add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice to a bowl, then cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes
  • Preheat oven to 200ºC
  • On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves to about 3 mm thick.
  • Roll the dough onto your rolling pin and unroll onto a pie dish, making sure the dough reaches all edges, then trim excess
  • Pour in filling mix and pat down, then roll the remaining dough on top
  • Trim the excess dough from the edges and crimp the edges together
  • Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar, then cut slits in the top to create a vent - decorate with pastry offcuts if desired
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes or until crust is golden brown
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream
